Replacing a Basement Window
Basement windows sometimes need to be replaced due to old age or damage. They are often broken by burglars, so installing a new basement window is very important. Depending on your basement, you need to have a hopper window, egress, or escape window. Installing good quality basement windows will keep your home secure and protected.
Egress Windows
An egress window is a window that is large enough that a person could escape from that window. An egress window’s size is determined by local fire codes, and must be operational and able to be opened from the inside without the use of special tools. Bedroom windows are egress windows. Your basement must include an egress window. If you don’t already have an egress window, you might consider replacing an existing smaller window with an egress window.
Hopper Windows
Hopper windows are required in a basement when there is no door or egress. A hopper window is a window that swings into the room from the top of the sash.
There are two types of glass for basement windows: Tempered and laminated.
Tempered Glass Basement Windows
Tempered glass is stronger than regular glass (4-5 times stronger) and doesn’t shatter into shards when broken. Car windows are often made of tempered glass. Tempered glass is kind of a safety net, reducing risk of injury if the glass breaks.
Laminated Glass Basement Windows
Laminated glass is also stronger than regular glass, because it’s two pieces of glass with a strong layer of vinyl in between the layers of glass. Benefits to laminated glass include less sound transfer, less risk of injury if the glass shatters, and that burglars can’t use glass cutters on laminated glass.
